Student self-employed status

Are you a student and want to be self-employed during your studies? Then the status of 'student self-employed' is interesting for you. It offers students some social and tax benefits to make the leap to entrepreneurship easier. 

The conditions

The conditions for applying for student self-employed status:

  • You are minimum 18 and maximum 25 years old.
  • You are enrolled to attend classes regularly in a Belgian or foreign educational establishment with a diploma.
  • You are enrolled for at least 27 credits a year or at least 17 teaching hours per week.

Are you still in secondary education? Even then, you can get student self-employed status from the quarter in which you turn 18, if you also meet the other conditions.

If you are a foreign student from the EU, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Switzerland who meets all the conditions, then you are also eligible for student self-employed status. 

Student from outside the EU with Belgian ID, apply online for a professional card through the Belgian diplomatic service for €140. It takes an average of 3-4 months to receive it.

Student from outside the EU without Belgian ID? Before you can apply for a professional card, you must declare it to the embassy of your country of origin. Only when that is done and approved can you apply for a professional card.

What is student-entrepreneur? 

Student-entrepreneur is not a legal status, but a recognition by colleges and universities for students with their own business. The procedure to be recognised as a student-entrepreneur differs depending on your educational institution. So inform yourself thoroughly when you enroll.
